Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 2026
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Discio (“we”, “us”), the developer of StudyMate, collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use the StudyMate iOS app and the website at studymate.discio.ch.
We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data in accordance with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
2. Data Controller
- Name: Discio
- Email: support@discio.ch
- Website: studymate.discio.ch
3. Personal Data Collected
Depending on how you use StudyMate, we may process the following categories of data.
3.1 Data you create in the app (grades, tasks, school years)
StudyMate is built so that your academic content — subjects, grades, homework, exams, focus sessions, and related settings — stays on your device by default.
If you enable optional cloud features available with StudyMate Plus, this content may be synced to our cloud infrastructure so you can restore it or use it across devices. Until then, it is not uploaded to our servers.
3.2 Account data (optional)
If you sign in (for example to purchase or unlock StudyMate Plus on the web or in the app), we may process:
- Email address
- Account identifiers provided by the sign-in provider (for example Google or Apple)
- Basic profile information the provider shares with us (such as display name), if any
3.3 Purchase and subscription data
If you subscribe to StudyMate Plus:
- App Store purchases are processed by Apple. We do not receive your full payment card details.
- Web purchases are processed by Stripe. We receive confirmation of the subscription status and related billing metadata needed to unlock Plus; we do not store your full card number.
3.4 Technical and usage data
We may process limited technical data needed to run and secure the service, such as:
- Device type and OS version
- App version
- Approximate diagnostic information (for example crash or error signals), if enabled
- Authentication and security logs related to sign-in and checkout
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your academic content for advertising.
4. Legal Basis for Processing
We process personal data on the following bases:
- Performance of a contract — to provide StudyMate, deliver StudyMate Plus, and manage your account.
- Legitimate interests — to secure the service, prevent abuse, and improve reliability, in ways that respect your rights.
- Consent — where required (for example certain optional notifications or analytics), which you can withdraw at any time.
- Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose data to comply with applicable law.
5. Purpose of Data Collection
We use personal data to:
- Provide core StudyMate features (grade tracking, homework, focus tools).
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- Process subscriptions and unlock StudyMate Plus.
- Optionally sync and restore your data when cloud features are enabled.
- Respond to support requests.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the app and website.
- Comply with legal obligations.
6. Screen Time and Focus Mode
Focus Mode may use Apple Screen Time / Family Controls APIs on your device to help block distracting apps during study sessions. This processing happens on your device under Apple’s system permissions. We do not receive a feed of your other apps’ content for advertising.
7. Data Retention
- On-device academic data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
- Account and cloud-synced data is retained while your account is active, or until you request deletion.
- Purchase records may be retained as required for accounting, tax, and dispute resolution.
- Support correspondence is retained as long as needed to resolve your request, then deleted or anonymized within a reasonable period.
When data is no longer needed, we delete or anonymize it.
8. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We share personal data only with service providers that help us operate StudyMate, and only as needed for those purposes:
- Apple — App Store distribution, In-App Purchases, push delivery (APNs), and system frameworks you authorize (including Screen Time-related APIs).
- Stripe — web subscription checkout and billing for StudyMate Plus.
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Functions, and related infrastructure) — account sign-in and server-side features such as unlocking Plus after web checkout. Some Firebase processing may occur outside Switzerland (see Section 10).
- Infomaniak — hosting of this website in Switzerland.
- RevenueCat (if enabled for your build) — subscription status bridging between stores and the app.
These providers process data under their own privacy policies and contractual safeguards.
We do not share your grades or homework with advertisers or data brokers.
9. Your Rights
Under the Swiss FADP and, where applicable, the GDPR, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data
- Request erasure of your data (“right to be forgotten”), subject to legal limits
- Restrict or object to certain processing
- Receive a portable copy of data you provided, where applicable
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent
To exercise these rights, email support@discio.ch.
You may also lodge a complaint with the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), or with your local supervisory authority in the EEA if GDPR applies to you.
10. International Transfers
The StudyMate website is hosted in Switzerland (Infomaniak).
Some account, checkout, and cloud features rely on providers (for example Firebase and Stripe) that may process data in the United States or other countries. Where we transfer personal data abroad, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognized under Swiss and EU law (such as standard contractual clauses or the provider’s approved transfer mechanisms).
11. Children’s Privacy
StudyMate is intended for students and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact support@discio.ch and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
If you are a minor under the age of digital consent in your country, please use StudyMate only with a parent or guardian’s involvement where required.
12. Data Security
We take appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect personal data, including:
- Encrypted transport (HTTPS / TLS)
- Access controls for cloud infrastructure
- Least-privilege practices for operational access
- On-device storage for academic data by default
No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure. Please keep your device and sign-in methods protected.
13. App Tracking Transparency
StudyMate does not track you across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising under Apple’s App Tracking Transparency definition. We do not use third-party advertising SDKs for cross-app tracking.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of StudyMate after an update means you acknowledge the revised policy. For material changes, we may provide additional notice in the app or on the website.
